YES, here she is, the original Freya, the legend, is for sale. Present
owner is not using her much anymore and wants to find his beloved yacht a
new owner that will give her what she deserves, she wants to be sailing!
History: If you are on this page you probably know her history, but still,
here goes:
The Halverson family emigrated from Norway to Australia. Halverson
designed numerous boats, but this one, the original Freya, is the most famous.
She won the difficult Sydney-Hobart race for three consecutive years, in
'63, '64 and '65. Conditions in this race could be anything from storm
to dead calm, Freya however managed an average speed of 8 knots.
As a proven seaworthy and fast yacht her line drawings have been used by
John Gannon to build numerous Freya 39s, still very popular cruising
yachts.
More recently she did very well in the Antigua classic yacht regatta
2010 in her class where she won 2nd price in both the concours
d'elegance and the race!
Facts: The yacht was built in 1963. Planks are Douglas fir vertical grain, glued and splined, these
planks do not move (you wooden boat lovers know what I mean) on Oak
frames. The deck is fiberglass on wood, it does not leak at all. Work
was done in the '90's on some frames, even though they passed a LLoyds
insurance survey as perfect, owner wanted to make sure.
Linens, pots and pans, cutlery will all be on board.
Get the keys and she is ready for you, if you are ready for her! Except you may
want to replace the bimini canvas, it is looking a bit old.
Update May 2013, this has now been done.
